Norwegian Pakistani players got the Norway’s Tent Pegging Team qualified for upcoming World Cup in United Arab Emirates.
The matches for Tent Pegging’s World Cups would be held in Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital city in September this year.
The tournament for world cup qualifying was held recently in Saudi Arabia where Norwegian Tent Pegging Team headed by its captain Dr Mamoon Akram Gondal was successfully qualified for the world cup.
Dr Mamoon Akram who inherited the tent pegging from his family, introduced the tent pegging in Norway in 2013. He said, in last five year, he was able to promote tent pegging by arranging matches in different cities like Oslo, Trondheim and Bergen. Currently member of Norwegian Tent Pegging exceeded 40 people as many of the youth still continue to make contact for learning this sport.
Dr Mamoon Akram who is physician by profession said, he started to play tent pegging by age of 12 and he and his brother Dr Zubair Akram are of fourth generation of his family who play tent pegging. Dr Zubair has also extra ability of being Champion of weightlifting in Norway.
His father Akram Gondal had migrated from Bauth village of district Mandibahawaldin in 1970s but could not forget his culture and specially traditional sport of Tent Pegging.
29-year old Dr Mamoon Akram is first Norwegian Pakistani who started to play tent pegging by keeping his own horse. The Norwegian Tent Pegging team has so far not only play inside the country but also has played in other countries including Germany, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Sudan.
To a question Dr Mamoon said that Tent Pegging like many other sports is a positive game and by applying this sport, youth could be prevented from negative activities like use of narcotics.
Giving his comments on this great achievement in sport by the Pakistanis in Norway, Secretary Information of Pakistan Union Norway Malik Pervez Mehr said, Norwegian Pakistani community prouds upon Pakistani players who not only introduced Tent Pegging in Norway but also played important role in bringing the team to the world cup.
